Secretary
Axed for Dyslexia Wins £2,000.
A dyslexic
secretary who was fired in her first week has won £2000 compensation. Lee
Anna MacIver was told she wasn't processing invoices quickly enough when she was
sacked by Mega Foods Ltd. She
took the firm to an employment tribunal in Glasgow under the UK Disability Discrimination
Act. Miss MacIver
had told the Glasgow company about her disability when she was offered the job.
She understood her
duties would involve tasks she wouldn't have any problems with. Miss
MacIver, of the city's Dumbarton Road, said she had particular trouble with numbers.
She said her supervisor
had no sympathy for her when told of her problem. She
was dismissed a few days later. Tribunal
chairman Michael MacMillan said: 'The firm paid little or no attention to her
disability. It was clear from evidence that the applicant brought it to their
attention.' Miss
MacIver was awarded £1000 for injury to her feelings, plus six weeks' wages £990.
No one from the firm
turned up for the tribunal hearing earlier this month. By
