Shire Pharmaceuticals' best-selling drug for hyperactivity disorder has been pulled from the market in Canada after being linked to the deaths of 14 children and six adults.

Health Canada, the national regulator, said the decision was a result of a "thorough review" of safety data which revealed 20 cases of sudden death and 12 reports of stroke in patients taking Adderall.

Some of the country's most prominent dyslexics, including Sir Jackie Stewart, the former world racing champion, have reacted furiously to research claiming the condition makes them dangerous drivers.

A Norwegian scientist claimed last week that people with the condition - often known as word blindness - were up to a third slower in reacting to traffic signals.

My story
begins when I first saw "Night Court" at the age of eight. I wanted to be Judge Harry T. Stone.
I thought that would be a great job. So, I decided then to become a lawyer (since you had to be a lawyer before you can become a judge). It was not until 16 years later I learned that my dream was going to be harder to obtain that most law students.

When I was in grade school, there was no information or clarity about dyslexia (1960's). I suffered through reading problems and because of that the school sent me to a private reading teacher to help me get my reading skills up. Certain words like "the, there, were, where what, was, are, this" and others, would reverse themselves and/or the letters would briefly appear scrabbled or the whole world would jump in front or behind where it belonged, causing a choppy kind of reading that was confusing and almost stutter-like.

The 17-year-old soul singer left school with just three GCSE qualifications and claims she wasn't very academic because of her learning disability. She revealed: "It wasn't that I was stupid. I'm just a little bit dyslexic and I wasn't very academic. I'm more artistic."

Last month, it was revealed Joss has joined forces with rock legend Mick Jagger to record a Christmas duet. The 61-year-old Rolling Stone and teenage singer have recorded a version of the 1974 Mud hit 'Lonely This Christmas' at UK London's famous Abbey Road studios.

Kristian Leontiou can barely read or write - but he's about to release his first album. Leontiou, 22, is a performer of sensitive songs and, with his first single due to enter the charts, he looks set to reap the rewards. Because of severe dyslexia, he is barely able to read or write.

Dream Comes True for a Dyslexic ActorDream Comes True for a Dyslexic Actor.

Talented actor and dancer Chris Palmer has beaten the odds to secure his dream role in a West End musical.

The former Lincoln Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society member is treading the boards in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in the capital's famous theatre district. Chris (24) is playing Gad in the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic show. Determined Chris landed the role at the New London Theatre in Drury Lane six years after failing his drama A-level. But, despite the setback, he made it to drama school - only to discover that he had dyslexia.

A dyslexic man who claims his life has been blighted by Havering, UK, teachers' failure to tackle his learning problems is bidding for half a million pounds compensation at London's High Court. David Smith, now 27, told the hearing this week that fellow pupils thought he was "an idiot" when teachers made him stand up in front of the class and try to read texts he simply could not decipher.

Su RidleyA severely dyslexic woman who struggles to write a shopping list spoke of her pride after publishing her first novel. Mum-of-three Su Ridley, 43, came up with the plot for the Gravesend-based crime thriller, 'Unnatural Justice', after finding books her husband read to her on holiday too boring. The former market trader, of Hatham Green, Hartley, hatched the twisting tale of murder, intrigue, politics and passion before dictating the 90,000-word whodunit to a typist. Mrs Ridley said: "When I was at school they just thought I was thick and I left with no O Levels. I have trouble spelling and writing, and have to read something at least four times to take it in. "But I have a great memory and the whole book was in my head."

She said somewhere along the way, drawing and painting became her stage.

Mastering the art, Ms. Maguire earned an Andy Warhol scholarship to the New York Academy of Art where she received a master of fine arts degree in sculpture.

Henry WinklerDyslexic actor 'Fonzie' writes two books - Henry Winkler is best known as television's "Fonzie", also know as Arthur Fonzarelli, of Happy Days.

Though most relate to him from his television role of many years, he is a well-educated man who struggles with dyslexia. He says of his childhood "I grew up with a high level of low self-esteem."

 

Miss Louisiana talks of Lifelong Struggle with Dyslexia - Melissa Bongiovanni proved a lot of people wrong when she was crowned Miss Louisiana USA in 1999.

The 5-foot 11-inch former beauty queen was often teased about her height and her reading impairment, which kept her behind throughout high school. Dyslexia caused her to work slower and differently in the classroom. "People said that because I was dyslexic, I wouldn't get anywhere," she said.

Joyce BullifantJoyce Bulifant didn't learn how to read until she was 13. Now, as executive vice president of The Dyslexia Foundation, she's bringing dyslexic education programs and awareness to the Roaring Fork Valley region.

Bulifant knows all about dyslexia. She is dyslexic, as is her son, John. So was her father, though he was never formerly diagnosed.

Bulifant said she read theatrical plays as a young girl because "it was multi-sensory."

keep left Traffic signs - Dyslexic adults can experience confusion over traffic signs. A group of ten dyslexic adults were compared with a similar group of non-dyslxic adults by Sheffield University, UK. The dyslexic adults were not so good at recognizing traffic signs. So watch out on the road!

A determined dyslexic woman has finally won her eight-year fight to take the state bar exam with a computer and other aids to help overcome her disability.

Manhattan federal Judge Sonia Sotomayor ruled yesterday that Marilyn Bartlett's dyslexia qualified her as a disabled person under federal law - and therefore entitled to "accommodations" in taking the bar exam.

Former F1 champion Sir Jackie Stewart, said he thought he was "thick" at school before discovering he was dyslexic. Sir Jackie said "word blindness" meant he had to race to keep up with other pupils. "The whole idea is to try and ensure we train our teachers better and hopefully one day we will have a teacher who specialises in learning disabilities, or learning differences, in every primary school. "Early diagnosis is the biggest and most important thing you can get to help a young person." He added: "In my particular case I didn't get diagnosed until I was 42.

Scientists have found that tinted contact lenses can help dyslexics read more easily.
