Summary

Phonological deficits in dyslexic children recur throughout the dozen different languages examined in this excellent academic book. Dyslexic children experience difficulties with all these languages, whether the language is based on single sounds, syllables or pictures, and each chapter analyzes the particular problems faced by children with a specific learning difficulty. The languages researched are German, Dutch, Greek, Polish, Russian, Swedish, French, Norwegian, Hebrew, Indian languages, Japanese languages and Chinese, as well as the difficulties faced by bilingual children.

In addition one chapter considers the problems children encounter when reading braille. The objective is to explore a variety of languages and to identify both the typical reading and spelling difficulties characteristic of each language considering its unique linguistic properties and the more common core deficits which can be considered the defining characteristic of developmental dyslexia regardless of language.
